Death to Insurance Companies

Wow. Medical insurance really needs reform. I am so tired of fighting with my two insurance companies to pay for the treatment I've gotten over the past year. In December I was diagnosed with a chronic auto-immune disorder. Since that time I've racked up a couple hundred thousand (yes, I'm serious) dollars of absolutely necessary medical bills, including hospital stay and chemotherapy at $8,000 a treatment.

Here comes the scary part. I have TWO, yes count them, two insurances. It has taken an act of God to get either of them to pay a dime for life-saving treatment. And now today I get yet another bill for $400 because I have maxed out my benefit for the year with one of them. Last time it took complaining to the state insurance bureau to get any money.

It's bad enough to be diagnosed with a serious condition at 27. Not that I'm complaining, at least there are some treatments (no cure), I can live a relatively normal life, and I've learned a lot about myself and life from this experience. But I take good care of myself, eat right, exercise, etc. and I still got sick. To add insult to injury, I have to fight to the death to get my medical expenses paid.

So what's the bottom line of this rant? We need reform for medical insurance. And a cure for ITP.

Introducing my blog

So I'm starting this blog to give myself a way to release while working on my dissertation...and to let everyone know how it's going. I've been working on a Ph.D. in special education for the last three years...I'm now in the home stretch, problem is it feels like a marathon event. I'm working on the dissertation, full-time, all day, all the time. Right now I've got close-to-final drafts of chapters 1 and 3 and I'm working under the gun to complete a first draft of chapter 2 by this Friday. Yikes!

The only thing keeping me sane is Phillip, my animals, and cooking. Oh yeah, and looking for a job. Everyday I search the chronicle of higher ed for new faculty positions. They are really starting to come out and I have some interesting prospects. I know everyone that's been hanging on for three years is wondering where we will move. Well, me too. That's TBA for sure.

Well...back to writing.
