Adoption Timeline

Just like having a baby through pregnancy, adoption doesn't happen overnight, typically. The preparation work is pretty intensive, and the actual "match" process is expensive, so it takes time to get all your ducks in a row.

I thought you might like an update on what we have done and what we are still working on. As you can see from our Lillypie ticker on the blog, we have only been working on this for a month and a half. Boy, it feels like longer!!!

So here is our timeline with our agency, American Adoptions.

April: First two home study visits completed. References completed. Background check submitted. Print profile completed. Nursery partially completed to the satisfaction of the social worker.

May: Purchase a car seat to show the social worker. Final home study visit (next week). Physicals and TB tests for both of us. A BUNCH of forms that have to be notarized and mailed. Complete 10 hours of online parenting training. Complete our profile video.

June & July: Work like a dog to save the match budget. You have to have it ready to send in two days of the birthparent(s) choosing you. And as we all know....well...money doesn't grow on trees.

August: Officially go active. Then, we wait to be chosen. 1-9 months for being chosen typically, 3-12 months for placement. It's possible we could have a 2012 baby, but more likely it will be early 2013. Then again, sometimes you get called in 24 hours. Again, we are not in the driver's seat, but we ARE trying to be as patient as we can be. At some point during this process, we will try to meet the birth parent(s). We will definitely have a conference call with them, but we hope to meet them as well. Meeting them in person helps prevent disruptions.

Until then, we'll be enjoying our summer, and enjoying planning to be parents, just like any pregnant couple would be, because we know that when we become parents, our lives will change forever.
